Irrigation Fall Winterization Salem NH

In the Northeast, we experience freezing temperatures as early as the beginning October. Consequently, your sprinkler and irrigation system must be properly winterized to safeguard against freeze damage. Our Winterization service includes:

  • Turn water off to the sprinkler and irrigation system and drain vacuum breaker and interior pipes
  • Where applicable, remove and/or drain pump, suction line, check valve and filter
  • Deactivate controller and valves. Remove battery from solid-state controller.
  • Clear all lines of water with compressed air, and, if applicable, open all manual drains and faucets

Because the timing of the arrival of freezing weather varies from season to season freeze warnings are popping up all over the country. Wait until November and you are looking at sprinkler repairs at hundreds of dollars instead of a cheap sprinkler blow out.

An unlicensed handyman type will be cheaper but do they have the expertise, proper air compressor and are they familiar with the right PSI settings for the different brands and sprinkler system configurations.

Winterizing is done with an air compressor. On a residential property, getting all the water out takes 1 to 3 minutes per zone. Depending on the size of the sprinkler system, drips take 5 -10 minutes. This is the best way to winterize your sprinkler system to help insure that there is no water that can freeze, leading to costly repairs.

You may want watch a pro do it if the system is new to you. Then you can decide if your skill level matches the job. Contact Nassar Landscaping and Irrigation, Inc. by calling us at 603-893-5021 or contact us for more details.

Sprinkler and Irrigation Start up Salem NH

During April and May, we recommend our spring start-up service to get your sprinkler and irrigation system up and running for the season. Winter ground heaving, heavy snowfall and snow removal can all take a toll on adjustments and function of your sprinkler heads. Our Spring Start-up service inspects for all the issues winter leaves behind. As well, from year to year your landscaping changes, shrubs and trees grow and sometimes landscaping is redesigned or changes. At the time of Spring Start-up, we review the design of your current irrigation system and the condition of your sprinklers in order to recommend changes or enhancements that will ensure your irrigation system meets the needs of all of your lawn and plants in the most efficient manner. From a simple head change, to the addition of entire zones, our technicians will work with you to optimize turf and plant coverage.

We will check all the components to ensure your system is fully functional for the watering season. This service includes:

  • Turn water on to the sprinkler system and inspect sprinkler plumbing and vacuum breaker.
  • Examine each zone and adjust for adequate coverage.
  • Diagnose any repairs that need to be made to the sprinklers or irrigation system.
  • Where applicable, install pump, suction line, check valve, and filter (quote will be supplied).
  • Activate the controller, set watering schedule and test all valves in the system. Install battery. (Battery sold separately)
  • Inspect and adjust the system for proper coverage.
  • Check for system leaks.
  • Check function of all heads and nozzles.
  • Provide information and quote for all repairs needed exceeding $100.00

Scheduling your spring start-up depends on the weather conditions and your individual watering needs. Contact Nassar Landscaping and Irrigation, Inc. by calling us at 603-893-5029 or contact us for more details.

Sprinkler and Irrigation Tune-Up and Maintenance

Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc recommends a sprinkler tune-up at least once a month, from April thru October. The sprinkler and irrigation tech sets your sprinkler time clock by time of year. More watering in June, July, and August, less in April, May, September and October. The sprinkler tech will also check each watering zone to make sure that it is efficiently watering your New Hampshire lawn.

Over time sprinkler heads wear out for several reasons.

  • Grass can grow over the heads blocking the sprinkler from popping-up to its full height.
  • Landscape plants can block the spray pattern of the sprinkler head.
  • Debris can block the sprinkler head.
  • Careless mowing can cut some of the sprinkler head.
  • Tree roots may depress the pipe causing water stoppages.

Irrigation Maintenance Services

In order to keep your system at its peak performance, and possibly avoid high water bills caused from undetected leaks, it is best to have a seasoned professional routinely go over your sprinkler and irrigation system from top to bottom.
We offer service agreements which provide the following pre-paid services for a one year period, with system checks to be made either Bi-weekly, Monthly, Quarterly or Semi-annually. In addition to the following service, all contracts include a spring and fall checkup which will prepare your sprinkler irrigation system for the summer and winter season ahead.

  • Check for proper valve function
  • Clean filters
  • Check for proper water coverage and distribution
  • Make adjustments and changes as needed
  • Program irrigation controller for the appropriate season
  • Priority scheduling for repair work as needed and there will be no Basic Service Charge assessed on these calls

Sprinkler Installation Salem NH

Irrigation System Installation & Repair Specialists

Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc is a landscaping and irrigation installation, repair and maintenance company that has been servicing the greater Salem and Rockingham County area for over 25 years. If your sprinkler or drip irrigation system is not doing what you need it to do, we will evaluate the situation and solve your problem quickly and professionally. Afterwards, we will be happy to maintain the sprinkler and irrigation system for you. We even service irrigation systems we did not install. Our Technicians have been hand-picked and trained by the owner. In addition, Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc. is the proud recipient of several local awards such as voted the Best of the Best for seven years running, the Salem Garden Club award for most outstanding accomplishments in commercial landscaping, top twenty contractor award for 2000 and 2002
Our experienced Certified Irrigation Designers carefully determine all aspects of the system design before we begin the installation. During the design process, we carefully:

  • Evaluate your water source and available water pressure.
  • Assess the unique watering requirements of your lawn, gardens, planters and shrubbery as well as slope, sun and shade exposures.
  • Select sprinkler head types and positioning to guarantee proper coverage.
  • Follow the laws of water hydraulics to calculate the appropriate number and types of watering zones.
  • Determine controller type for best water practices.
  • Suggest design elements and equipment options to enhance the longevity, efficiency and ease of use of the irrigation system.

Professional Irrigation Installation

We insist on using the highest quality, professional grade irrigation products from leading manufacturers including Rain Bird and Hunter. Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc has its own Master Plumber on staff that is available for all the plumbing required for your new irrigation system. Our plumber can also perform backflow certifications that are regularly required by many municipalities. Whenever possible, we use a vibratory plow for "trenchless" pipe installation. Because vibratory plows do not excavate the soil, they are less destructive than standard trenchers on established turf. The existing sod heals quickly. After a few days of regular water and healing, there is little evidence that we were ever there.

  • We pay close attention to unseen details, making sure that we:
  • Safeguard the electrical components with special, waterproof wire connections.
  • Properly groom, compact and clean up any area of disturbed soil or turf.
  • Install sprinkler heads and valve boxes level to the grade.
  • Position sprinkler heads at a consistent distance from hardscape and bed edges.
  • Properly adjust all heads to your satisfaction.

Insurance

Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc has a comprehensive insurance program including General Liability and Worker's Compensation on every employee. Insurance certificates are available upon request.

Follow Through

We promise to make sure you are comfortable with the use of your sprinkler system. At the end of the irrigation installation process we will teach you how to use your new irrigation system controller as well as give you guidance with a suggested watering schedule. Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc is available year-round. If additional questions arise after the irrigation installation, we are always available to make sure you have continued enjoyment of your Nassar Landscaping & Irrigation, Inc irrigation sprinkler system.

Irrigation Head Adjustment Salem NH

PGP Installation

The PGP® pop-up sprinkler should be installed at finished grade as shown in the illustration (Fig. 1).

PGP Proper Installation

Arc Adjustments

Adjustable heads are preset to approximately 180°. Sprinklers may be adjusted with water on or off. It is recommended that initial adjustments be made before installation.

PGP Arc Adjustment

  1. Using the palm of your hand, rotate the nozzle turret counterclockwise to the left stop to complete any interrupted rotation cycle (Fig. 2).
  2. Rotate the nozzle turret clockwise to the right stop. This is the fixed side of the arc. The nozzle turret must be held in this position for arc adjustments. The right stop does not change.

PGP Rubber Cover Diagram

To Increase the Arc:

  1. Insert the plastic key end of the Hunter wrench  into the adjustment socket (Fig. 3 & 4).
  2. While holding the nozzle turret at the right stop, turn the wrench clockwise. Each full 360° turn of the wrench will increase the arc 90°.
  3. Adjust to any arc between 40° and 360° (Fig. 5).
  4. The wrench will stop turning, or there will be a ratcheting noise, when the maximum arc of 360° (full circle) has been reached.

PGP Arc Adjustment Illustration

To Decrease the Arc:

  1. Insert the plastic key end of the Hunter wrench into the adjustment socket (Fig. 3 & 4).
  2. While holding the nozzle turret at the right stop, turn the wrench counterclockwise. Each full 360° turn of the wrench will decrease the arc 90°.
  3. Adjust to any arc between 40° and 360° (Fig. 5).
  4. The wrench will stop turning, or there will be a ratcheting noise, when the minimum arc of 40° has been reached.

Radius / Distance of Throw

Insert the steel hex end of the Hunter wrench into the radius adjustment screw (Fig. 6). Turn the screw clockwise (into the stream of water) to decrease the radius, or counterclockwise to increase the radius. Radius can be reduced up to 25%.

Caution: Turning the adjustment screw clockwise more than five full turns may result in a lost radius adjustment screw.

Precipitation Rate Adjustment

If you have excessively wet or dry areas, you can change the nozzle in the sprinkler to increase or decrease the precipitation rate. For dry areas, install a larger nozzle. For wet areas, install a smaller nozzle.

Nozzle Installation

  1. Insert the plastic key end of the Hunter wrench into the lifting socket of the sprinkler and turn 90°. Pull the riser up to gain access to the nozzle socket (Fig. 8).
  2. Using the steel hex key of the Hunter wrench, turn the radius adjustment screw (Fig. 6) counterclockwise to be sure it is not blocking the nozzle socket opening. If a nozzle is already installed, it can be removed by backing out the adjustment screw and turning on the water, or by pulling outward on the nozzle “ears” with a pair of needle-nosed pliers.
  3. Slip the desired nozzle into the nozzle socket (Fig. 7). Note that the socket is angled up 25°. The “ears” should be adjusted so that the nozzle range screw threads directly down between them. Then tighten the nozzle range screw. The raised bump with an arrow on the rubber cover will always indicate the location of the nozzle and direction of water flow when the sprinkler is retracted.

Nozzle Installation Diagram

Aligning the Right (Fixed) Side of Arc

Aligning Arc DiagramIf the right side of the arc is not properly aligned, the results may be a wet walkway or a dry turf area. The right side arc can easily be realigned. One way to realign the right stop is to turn the whole sprinkler body assembly and the fitting below it, left or right to the desired position. This may require temporary removal of the soil around the sprinkler to allow you to grip the sprinkler housing.

Another way to reset the right arc is to unscrew the body cap counterclockwise and remove the internal assembly from the body. Once removed, rotate the nozzle turret to the right stop, screw the internal assembly back into the body with the nozzle aligned to the right side of the area you want irrigated (Fig. 9). At this point you have realigned the right arc stop, and you can adjust the left arc to an appropriate setting.

Note: It is not necessary to dig up and remove the whole sprinkler to realign the right arc.

Note: The G Type rotary sprinklers adjust the same way a PGP does. See the PGP Installation and Adjustment Instructions above.

Bark Mulch Blowing & Installation Salem NH

Picture_216We spread mulch for residential and commercial customers

Put your wheelbarrows away and let Nassar Landscaping and Irrigation, Inc. take all the “work” out of yard work and mulching, so you can spend more time doing what you want to do! Our mulch blowing installation and soil products give you a beautiful weed free yard that your neighbors will all be talking about. Your yard will look great and your plants will love you, too. Proper application of mulch each year will protect your plants from extreme conditions. Mulch installation insulates your plants' roots from the heat while retaining necessary moisture and in the winter it keeps the roots under a protective blanket, conserving the warmth of the soil beneath. For those who still like to get down and dirty Nassar Landscaping and Irrigation, Inc. offers express delivery service generally within 24 to 48 hours.

Hardwood, Softwood, and Colored wood mulch have never been applied more effortlessly, and the smooth, professional look of the blown material is unrivaled with the remote control, the volume of output can be adjusted quickly to a minimum flow for spreading around delicate flowers or turned up higher in more wide open areas. Even coarse mulches can be applied using the interchangeable 4" or 5" hoses.

Hardwood Bark Mulch Benefits

Shredded Hardwood Bark Mulch is made from shredded bark of hardwood trees such as oak, maple or birch. This mulch offers a variety of benefits including durability, slow decomposition and effective weed deterrence. It is an ideal choice for home landscaping sloped hills or for particularly wet climates.

Appearance

  • Hardwood mulching ranges from light to dark brown in color, depending on the wood used to make it. Mulch can be dyed different colors as well. Natural and artificial colors will eventually fade with time and exposure to sun. Natural colors last about one year; dyed colors fade in to three years.

Deters Weeds

  • Hardwood mulching is effective at suppressing weed growth by preventing weed seeds that are already in the soil from germinating when applied at least 4 inches thick. Any weeds that do grow are much easier to pull out, reducing maintenance time.

Durable

  • Hardwood mulching compacts over time which makes it resistant to blowing or washing away. This protects roots from heat in the summer and the dehydrating effects of dry winter winds and makes it ideal for sloped terrain and wet climates.

Longer Lasting

  • Hardwood mulching decomposes at a slower rate than some other types of mulch. It can be purchased in single, double or triple shredded varieties; the higher the shred count, the finer the mulch. Aim to have 2 to 4 inches of mulch (after settling). For coarser mulch, this will mean simply adding a thin top layer once a year. Finer mulch will need 2 to 4 inches of new mulch added each year.

Organic

  • In contrast to inorganic types of mulch, such as plastic, rubber or gravel, hardwood mulch contains nutrients that seep into the soil as the mulch decomposes, improving soil quality over time.

Natural Colors

  • The colors of shredded hardwood mulch vary with the trees used, but span a range of browns. Some have a reddish tint.

Dyes

  • Dyed mulch is commonly available in red, brown and black. Some garden stores and nurseries carry a wider range of colors, such as yellow, orange, blue and green.

Dyeing Process

  • Hardwood Bark Mulch is dyed by feeding it into a hopper, where it is combined with colorant and water. A conveyor belt carries the mulch from the hopper to a container or pile.

Environmental Concerns

  • Dyed mulches are often made with low quality wood, such as ground-up pallet wood, which may be treated with chemicals such as chromium, copper and arsenic. They could harm your garden. The dyes may stain clothes, skin and concrete, but are not necessarily harmful.

Weathering

  • Over time, both natural and dyed hardwood bark mulches decompose and fade, though some maintain their color much longer than others. Periodically, add a thin layer to the top of existing mulch. Do not exceed 4 inches in total depth for chip mulches and 2 inches for shredded mulches.

When it comes to getting the best in bark mulch application, look no further than to the experts at Nassar Landscaping! Our service is different from the competitions. In addition to hardwood we offer:

  • Premium Blend
  • Pine
  • Black
